Used to class 11 unit 16 English Grammar

 Used to 

Used to - It shows habitual past actions or past states. It tells us that there was a repeated action or state in the past which has now changed.

affirmative  -  S+ used to + V1 …..

negative   -    S+didn't use to + V1 …..

                     Or S + used not to +V1 …….

question    -  Did + S + use to +V1 ….?

was/were - be (verb)(S+ used to be +.....)


1) S + used to + V1 + ....

    a) They came out in those days.
      They used to come out in those days.

b)  I/live in a flat when I was a child. 
      used to live in a flat when I was a child.


2) S + didn't use to + V1

a) They didn’t go out in those days.
    They didn’t use to go out in those days.

b) I/not hate school from the beginning. 
    I did not use to hate school from the beginning.


3) Did + S + use to +V1 ….?

a) Play football every weekend?
    Did he use to play football every weekend?

b) They went to market every month?
    Did they use to go to market every month?
  (went - go)

4) was/were - be (verb) (S+ used to + be +remaining sentence after was and were)

(a) I was in love with her.
         I used to be in love.

b) There were lots of people at the museum.
      There used to be lots of people at the museum.

Now, rewrite the following sentences using ‘used to’. You can make an affirmative/ negative statement or a question.

a. I/live in a flat when I was a child. 
  I used to live in a flat when I was a child.

b. She/love eating chocolate but now she hates it. 
    She used to love eating chocolate but now she hates it.

c. He/go to fishing in the summer? 
    Did he use to go fishing in the summer?

f. My grandfather/speak five languages. 
   My grandfather used to speak five languages.

g. I/not hate school from the beginning. 
    I did not use to hate school from the beginning.

h. You/live in Kathmandu?
     Did you use to live in Kathmandu?

i. He/play Dandibiyo when he was a small child.
   He used to play Dandibiyo when he was a small child.

j. She/wear a frock when she was small but nowadays she wears jeans. 
   She used to wear a frock when she was small but nowadays she wears jeans.
